From Support to Strategy: AI’s Role in Empowering Legal Teams
Insights from LMA Canada Regional Conference 2024: Big Data, Part 1
Blog Post
The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally reshaping the way industries operate, and the legal sector is no exception. In an increasingly competitive landscape, law firms must adapt to technological advancements to remain relevant. AI tools like ChatGPT, Harvey, Copilot and others offer new ways to streamline operations, personalize client experiences, and reduce repetitive tasks. However, these innovations also bring challenges, including privacy concerns, ethical considerations, and the potential loss of the human touch that defines professional services.
At the recent Legal Marketing Association (LMA) conference, an interactive fishbowl session titled AI Ascendancy: Reshaping the Workforce for a Tech-Driven Future brought together industry experts and attendees to explore the role of AI in the workplace. This collaborative discussion offered valuable insights into how law firms can harness AI’s potential while addressing its risks.
Overview
Moderated by Amrita Kochhar, Director of Marketing and Technology at Bennett Jones, the session featured an impressive panel of experts, including Mary Anne Heckbert, Director of Business Development at McMillian LLP, Morgan MacLeod, Founder of Cubicle Fugitive, Michelle Bell, Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives at Miller Thomson LLP, Adhi Reza, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications at Lenczner Slaught and Felicity Aston, Director of Business Development and Marketing and Field Law. Over the course of an hour, the group explored how AI is reshaping workflows, marketing strategies, and team structures in the legal industry.
How AI is Shaping the Legal Industry
AI tools like ChatGPT and Harvey are beginning to play a pivotal role in law firm marketing and business development. Currently in the early stages of adoption, firms are using these tools for brainstorming, streamlining research, creating first drafts of proposals, and automating mundane tasks. Due to security and privacy hesitations, law firms are understandably slower to adopt AI into their legal activities, such as creating or editing legal files. However, they remain open to the technology and are closely monitoring advancements. By taking on repetitive tasks like data entry, AI frees up teams to focus on high-value, strategic activities.
However, panellists noted the importance of balancing innovation with caution. They highlighted the risk of homogenization, as widely used tools could make content and strategies feel repetitive. The emphasis was on using AI as a support system rather than a replacement, ensuring firms retain their unique voices and maintain meaningful client relationships.
Building the Legal Teams of Tomorrow
Integrating AI into law firm operations requires more than adopting new technology—it calls for reimagining team skillsets. The panel emphasized the need for law firms to equip their teams with both hard and soft skills. Technical proficiency in AI tools is essential, but so are adaptability, flexibility, and emotional intelligence.
To build these skills, firms must foster a culture of experimentation where employees feel empowered to test new tools and learn through trial and error. Training and certifications in AI are becoming increasingly valuable, enabling teams to understand how these tools can enhance—not replace—their work.
Leaders also need to consider accessibility. Advanced versions of AI tools should be made available to all team members, not just leadership. This investment ensures that everyone can benefit equally, preventing financial barriers from discouraging adoption.
Breaking the Stigma Around AI
Despite its growing prevalence, AI still carries a stigma in many professional settings. Some professionals are hesitant to use AI tools or admit they do. To overcome this, the panel recommended normalizing AI usage by incorporating it into everyday tasks and leadership discussions.
Providing guidance, tutorials, and a safe space for experimentation can help teams become more comfortable with AI. Encouraging transparency about its use can also reduce the fear of judgment, fostering an environment where innovation thrives.
Where Do We Go From Here?
The legal industry should prepare for a future where AI is an integral part of daily operations. Panellists agreed that AI will increasingly handle routine tasks, enabling professionals to focus on strategy, relationship building, and personalized marketing campaigns. However, marketers should ensure that these tools are used thoughtfully to enhance the client experience.
As AI adoption accelerates, legal marketing roles will evolve to focus more on strategic planning and leveraging AI to amplify a firm’s unique voice. This shift requires marketers to champion ethical considerations while using AI to foster deeper client connections. Firms must also invest in structured training programs to ensure their teams are equipped to adapt to these changes.
AI’s potential is undeniable, but its adoption should be approached thoughtfully. The panellists stressed that while AI can simplify processes, human creativity, oversight, and emotional intelligence will remain critical. By positioning AI as a tool for support, marketers can preserve the trust and authenticity that clients expect.
Cubicle Fugitive Recommendations
AI has the potential to revolutionize how law firms operate, but its adoption requires a thoughtful, balanced approach. At Cubicle Fugitive, we believe that successful AI integration starts with a clear vision and a commitment to innovation and accountability.
Here’s how we recommend firms approach AI adoption:
- Start Small: Introduce AI tools gradually, focusing on simple applications to build familiarity and confidence within your team. Start with brainstorming or drafting initial ideas to streamline processes.
- Prioritize Privacy: Set up guardrails when using tools like ChatGPT and explore secure, industry-specific solutions like Harvey to ensure compliance and client confidentiality.
- Prompts and Manners: Treat AI tools like collaborators. Be polite and direct in your prompts, and don’t hesitate to ask for refinements. This approach helps both your team and the AI produce better results.
- Upskill Teams: Invest in training programs to equip employees with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world. To encourage widespread adoption, make advanced AI tools accessible to all team members at the firm’s expense.
- Embrace Experimentation: Foster a culture of curiosity and innovation, encouraging teams to test AI tools and learn from their experiences.
- Maintain Your Voice: Use AI to enhance, not replace, your firm’s unique identity, ensuring that your brand’s message and client relationships remain authentic.
- Reassure Your Team: Make it clear to your team that they should think of AI as an add-on, not as a replacement. Use these tools to grow your firm’s capabilities and impact.
We’d be remiss not to acknowledge that ChatGPT lent a hand in drafting and editing this blog. But, true to our philosophy, it was only a starting point and add-on. At Cubicle Fugitive, we know that the human element—creativity, insight, and a deep understanding of our clients—is irreplaceable. AI is here to support, not supplant, the ingenuity that defines our work.
